Frequently Asked Questions What are the guidelines for the flowers? The beauty of this activity is that there are very few restrictions. It is all about transforming unwanted, used items into beautiful outdoor flowers. The few guidelines that do exist are as follows:
Your challenge is to come up with creative and innovative uses for unwanted used materials around your home or office. Please avoid using new materials or materials that may be harmful to you or the environment (eg. turpentine, shellac, toluene, spray paint, bleach, etc.). For more specific instructions and ideas for creating the flowers see the Plant It Forward Project Guidelines. Do you have pictures of the flowers made so far? Our blog and our Plant It Forward Guidelines have several pictures of the amazing flowers already made. We hope they inspire you to create your own unique flowers. How will flowers be displayed? Flowers will be staked directly into the snow. That’s why it’s important to have a strong, sturdy stem that we can push into dense snow banks. The exact design or layout of the flower display will be determined once we see the variety, size, shape and colours of flowers that we collect. One thing’s for sure, it will be an impressive display! Where will the flowers be displayed? We’ll be displaying the flowers at the Historic Port at the Forks. Everyone is welcome to come for a stroll through our community flower garden. When will the flowers be displayed? Flowers will be on display from Friday, March 12 to Sunday, April 4, 2010. Can I get my flower back? We are very grateful for your flower donation, every flower will add to our display and will help raise more money for Habitat for Humanity. But unfortunately, due to the large volume of flowers and unpredictable weather conditions, we won’t be able to return your flower to you. What happens to the flowers after the event? There are several plans in place for the flowers after the event. Some flowers will be used in parades by other community groups, some will be displayed at other venues, some will make it to gardens around Winnipeg and some will be dismantled and rerouted to their original destination. How does this campaign raise money for Habitat for Humanity? While numerous community organizations are busy building flowers, we’ll be busy soliciting donations from businesses throughout Winnipeg. The more flowers we build and the bigger our visual display becomes, the more donations we’ll get. In return for their donation, businesses will have their names listed as Habitat Heroes on our website and our promotional material. Be sure to thank our Habitat Heroes next time you do business with them. Who’s putting on this event? This event is part of an annual effort by IBEX Payroll to take care of its community. IBEX strongly believes we need to work together and take action to ensure we have a vibrant, thriving and beautiful community where everyone has a decent place to live. That’s why for the last five years, IBEX has been cleaning up the South Osborne Street Underpass and has been raising funds for Habitat for Humanity. But IBEX isn’t doing it alone. Corporate sponsors, community volunteers and donors are the real heroes. To find out more about who’s involved check out our list of donors and participants. How many flowers can I make? Make as many flowers as you want! The more flowers we get the greater the impact, the more powerful our message and the more money we’ll raise. Is there a prize for the best flower? No. Every flower in this installation has equal power to inspire and send the message that when community comes together we can make the impossible, possible. Where should we bring our flowers? Please bring your flowers (stem and all) to IBEX Payroll at 421 Mulvey Avenue East just south of the South Osborne Underpass by March 1, 2010. Where can I get flower making material? You’ll be amazed about what you have lying around your home or office that can be turned into beautiful flowers. If you have worn out socks, empty yogurt containers, soda cans, CDs, pop bottles, plastic lids, yarn, fabric, cardboard boxes, etc. then you’ve got everything you need!
